Rita, Sue and Bob, Too

Out of Joint

By Andrea Dunbar

Age Guidance: 16+

Best friends Rita and Sue get a lift home from married Bob after babysitting his kids. When he takes the scenic route and offers them a taste of adult adventure, the three start a fling each of them think they can control.

Told with wicked humour, startling insight and a great ear for dialogue, Andrea Dunbar’s semi-autobiographical play is a vivid portrait of girls caught between brutal childhood and an unpromising future.

Written when she was just 19, Rita, Sue and Bob Too was an instant hit, later adapted into a much-loved 80s film. It proved as fresh and popular as ever in this new production by Kate Wasserberg, garnering great praise on tour and during its packed-out London run.

A bleak and brilliant testament to a life of fleeting pleasure and diminished expectations.

The Guardian

This is a great production, riveting… A fine piece of work, a blast of real life

The Times

capture[d] beautifully the verve and innocent vulgarity of girls to whom sex is a welcome respite from school and the half-paid drudgery of the Youth Training Scheme at the local mill…racingly uncensored and often very funny… And one of the real virtues of this revival is that it does not go in for sermonising hindsight but lets this very good play speak for itself. Strongly recommended.
