Chair of the Board

Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds (Bury St Edmunds Theatre Management Ltd) is seeking a new Chair to lead its Board of Trustees and work with the Director/CEO to champion the next 4 years.  You do not need to be from an arts background but you do need to be passionate about theatre and the impact it makes within its community and be able to offer leadership through exciting times.

The Board of Trustees meet 6 times a year and the Finance and Resources sub-committee meet a further 6 times.  The Chair would be expected to meet regularly with the Chief Executive and represent the organisation in relation to fundraising and advocacy.  We expect the time commitment to be one – two days a month and the post is unremunerated.

Theatre Royal had a major organisational review in 2012 and under the leadership of Stephen Bourne, Chair, and Karen Simpson, Director/CEO the organisation has been turned around.  It now looks forwards with confidence and has plans to further increase its audiences, revitalise its creative and production work, place the customer at the heart of how it operates, increase its revenue and provide dynamic cultural leadership within East Anglia.

The organisation is funded by Suffolk County Council and St Edmundsbury Borough Council.  Theatre Royal was an NPO of Arts Council until 2013 and is seeking to re-establish a funding relationship over the next 12 months.

Theatre Royal is also the only theatre in the National Trust’s portfolio and is a building of national significance.

Theatre Manager

This is a new senior management post created to support the Director in the management of all aspects of the customer care and the maintenance of the Theatre Royal Bury St Edmunds, a Grade 1 listed building and a National Trust property.  We aspire to create a welcoming environment for all.

The Theatre Royal is entering a new stage of development and the post-holder will be part of the Senior Management team.

Theatre Royal is nearly 200 years old but was refurbished in 2007. The Theatre Manager would be a key post in managing the updating and repairs to the theatre in consultation with the Director.

Theatre Royal presents a year round programme of drama, music, dance, comedy and a range of events including weddings and conferences. It also undertakes heritage tours and has a considerable Education and Community programme. The Theatre Manager will be a vital role in all aspects of Customer care in delivering these activities. They will be responsible for The Front of House and Events Manager, the Box Office Manager and the Theatre Bar Supervisor.

Salary circa £26,000

Marketing Volunteers

Do you love theatre and want to learn more from behind the scenes? Enjoy meeting new people and have some spare time during the week? Then Theatre Royal has the perfect opportunity for you! We are looking for volunteers to join our friendly marketing team to help with the following:

  • Distributing flyers to the general public in the town centre
  • Visiting the local shops, eateries and businesses on our distribution list to deliver posters and flyers
  • Delivering leaflets to local schools on our distribution list (if transportation allows)
  • Helping to prepare mailings for customers when necessary

Or alternatively, we are always looking for people to join our Advocate list in which we send print to your address for you to display in your local area.
